iCVD can efficiently synthesize high-quality, optical-grade polymeric thin films for a multitude of applications. Exploiting real-time monitoring enabled by in situ ellipsometry, we seek to demonstrate the preparation of polymeric multilayers with precise control over thickness (~ 1 nm resolution) and optical properties of each layer.

A series of halogenated polymers with high refractive indices (n =1.58 - 2.0+) are being developed using iCVD. The increase in refractive index is achieved through incorporating highly polarizable halogen elements into polymer matrices. The optical properties can be exquisitely tuned by adjusting the degree of halogenation via vapor treatment or copolymerization.
